Malala was on her way home from school on October 9, 2012, when a man boarded the bus and demanded to know which girl was Malala. When her friends turned to her, her location was given away and she was shot in the left side of the head. Two of Malala's friends were also injured in this attack.

The shooting left Malala in critical condition. At a military hospital in Peshawar, a portion of her skull was removed to treat her swelling brain. She was then transferred to Birrmingham, England to recieve further care.

While in the United Kingdom, she was taken out of a medically induced coma, and although she will require multiple surgeries, she has suffered no major brain damage.

 Gul Makai:

Gul Makai was Malala's pseudonym when she was blogging for BBC in 2009.  Malala used this name so she could speak about her life under the Taliban takeover, and their threats to deny girls an education, while keeping her identity a secret. However her identity was revealed by December of that same year.
